There are countless buzzwords in the energy efficiency sphere, but the one that probably looks the least familiar is passivhaus. What does it mean, and why does it matter?

Passivhaus is  is the German word for passive house, a type of design that is not just energy efficient, it can help you work towards a net zero home. A passive house is more of a concept than a set of specific standards that you need to adhere to. The reason you will sometimes see the passive house referred to as passivhaus is because the vast majority of structures made in this manner are in Germany, Austria, and Scandinavia.

Aiming to build or retrofit your home to create a passive house can help you save money on your monthly energy bills, thanks to the overall reduction in energy use and energy consumption. The goal is to achieve thermal comfort via passive, rather than active, means. This includes employing solar energy, heat recovery, and high performance insulation that effectively air seals the building envelope, to create a completely airtight home.
