What Is R-Value?

August 19, 2017 adamb@evidently.com

If there’s one phrase you hear mentioned a lot while you’re looking at what insulation to purchase for your home, it’s R-value. But what is R-value? Do you actually know? If you’ve been unsure until now, read on.

What does the “R” stand for, anyway?

It’s a great question. The R actually stands for “resistance,” as in an insulating material’s ability to resist heat from being transferred. Think about it this way: if you hold an empty can over a camp fire, how quickly do you think it will become too hot to hold? Contrast that with a heavy clay mug, and how different the timing would be. That’s a great way to understand the idea of thermal resistance.

It is typically believed that the higher the R-value, the more effective the insulation. While this is true to a certain extent, it isn’t the entire story. When it comes to spray foam insulation like Icynene, not only are you looking at an R-value that will minimize heat transfer, but the ability to air seal your home adds an even higher degree of energy efficiency.
